Extreme Lacquer

Wish we’d caught this “Collaqueration” exhibit in the UK, but oh my, the inspiration that remains! Expert lacquer craftsmen from Japan (Wajima and Nara) linked up with British-designers to create some seriously cool pieces. Love the revival of an ancient craft into the 21st century. Love that this global collaboration was conceived, and then actually happened.

Love these containers (designed by Julia Lohmann and Gero Grundmann and made by Kazutaka Furukomi) based on a Japanese roofscape.

Ever wondered what’s under all that lacquer? Wood. But laquered shapes are typically so refined that you can’t tell. So we love that this collaboration (between Max Lamb and Hidetaka Wakashima) preserves the grain.

And we can’t help loving this slightly wack number, entitled Silent Cello, for obvious reasons.
